What we are Learning at Young Discoverers

 Date:  Spring 2019

Community interest:  Spring; Chinese New Year; Valentine’s Day; Mother’s Day; Easter

Communication and Language: Listening and attention

22-36 – Listens to recognises, responds and shows an interest in sounds, speech, songs and rhymes

30-50 – Focusing attention from their own activity onto an activity offered by an adult

What we can do:

Show how you listen to your child by repeating back what they have said in your response to them.

Say your child’s name to gain their attention

Share rhymes, books and stories with your child in their home language

Explain why it is important to pay attention when other are speaking.

Literacy – Reading

22-36 Fills in the missing word or phrase of familiar rhymes, stories or games.

What we can do:

Read stories that children already know, pausing at intervals to encourage them to ‘read’ the next word, Eg  ‘Humpty Dumpty sat on a …’

Maths: Shape

22-36 Notices simple shapes and patterns

30-50 Shows an interest in shape and space by playing with shapes or making arrangements with objects.

30-50 Know that numbers identify how many objects are in a set.

30-50 Begin to represent umbers using fingers

What we can do:

Draw children’s attentions to patterns and shapes in everyday objects ie oblong lorry, square window. Encourage children to talk about the shapes they see and what they have constructed.

Count as often as you can with your child; you can count stairs, food, plates, jumps etc.  Match each number with an object or show the number on your fingers.

PSE: Making Relationships

22 – 36 Shows affection and concern for people who are special to them

30 – 50 Demonstrates friendly behaviour and forms good relationships with peers and familiar adults

What we can do:

Help children to join in and take turns.  Model ways of noticing how others are feeling and how to comfort and help others.  Help children to name and talk about feelings and emotions – happiness, sadness, anger

Understanding the world: The World

Developing an understanding of growth, decay and changes over time.

What we can do:

Talk about what you see on your way to pre-school, around the shops, in town or at the park.  Use lots of describing words.

Tell your key worker of any special interests your child has

How you can Help:

  • If you have any shallow garden containers/dust bin lids that we can make into bird baths
  • Bird feeders/feeding station
  • Please arrange with your Key Person or the office if you or a family member would like to come in and read a book in your home language to the children.
  • Parent volunteers for outings – Keep an eye out for notices of visits and return the parental permission form
  • Please arrange with your Key Person to share your talents and skills with us ie playing a musical instrument, dancing, gardening, etc
